PoE budget checklist for IP cameras (Oman & GCC)

Size PoE by summing camera PD draw (including heaters/IR/PTZ peaks), matching IEEE PoE class (af/at/bt), and confirming switch chassis power budget and cable length derating—not port count alone. For Oman/GCC sites, include outdoor temperature extremes and UPS runtime for the PoE switch stack. Avoid assuming every “PoE port” can run at maximum class simultaneously.

PoE camera budget checklist

  1. List each camera model with IEEE class and max draw from datasheet
  2. Add accessories that draw from the same PD (heaters, IR, audio)
  3. Choose af / at / bt capable switch ports accordingly
  4. Sum simultaneous worst-case draw per switch and per PSU/chassis
  5. Apply headroom (design margin) before accepting the BOM
  6. Validate cable category/length against PoE delivery needs
  7. Confirm UPS runtime for PoE switches and NVRs separately

FAQ

Is port count a safe PoE sizing method?
No. A 48-port PoE switch may not supply maximum class power on all ports at once. Use the published power budget and camera peaks.
Do I need bt for every camera?
Only when the PD requires it. Over-buying bt everywhere increases cost without improving image quality.
What should an RFQ include for PoE camera power?
Camera models + max watts/class, switch models with usable PoE budget, cable category/length assumptions, and outdoor temperature expectations.
