Cat6 vs fiber for commercial buildings (Muscat / GCC)

Use copper (Cat6/Cat6A) for short horizontal runs that need PoE to phones, cameras and access points. Use fiber for backbones, longer distances, and EMI-heavy pathways. In Muscat/GCC commercial buildings, heat, pathway fill, and future Wi-Fi densification often push designers toward fiber between telecom rooms even when desks stay on copper.

FAQ

Is fiber always better than Cat6?
No. Fiber wins for longer runs, EMI immunity, and higher aggregate backbone rates. Copper often wins for short horizontal drops to desks/APs when PoE is required.
When is Cat6A preferred over Cat6?
When you need stronger margin for 10GBASE-T on longer horizontal channels or denser alien-crosstalk environments — validate channel design rather than assuming the category label alone.
Can a building mix both?
Yes. Common pattern: fiber backbone between floors/MERs, copper horizontal to endpoints that need PoE.
